Ensuring Your Trailer's Reliability: When to Schedule Maintenance

Investing in a trailer comes with the expectation of reliability when you need it most. The last thing you want is to be stranded on the roadside due to trailer issues. To guarantee the durability and longevity of your trailer, routine maintenance is essential. Similar to your vehicle, regular upkeep and inspections are crucial for its continued functionality. Many trailers are stored outdoors, exposing them to potential damage from animals and weather conditions. Oftentimes, required repairs and issues may not be immediately noticeable. Undertaking preventative maintenance is far less stressful and costly than dealing with breakdowns.

The National Trailer and Towing Association (NTTA) recommends scheduling a trailer service every 6000 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first, for average use.

At Load’em Up Trailers, we follow a meticulous process to ensure that your trailer is thoroughly inspected and serviced, eliminating potential issues that could leave you stranded. Here's our checklist:

• The trailer is brought into the shop and lifted onto the hoist.
• Wheels are removed for inspection.
• The undercarriage of the trailer is visually inspected for any signs of wear or damage.
• A thorough inspection of suspension, axles, drums, brakes, bearings, and wiring is conducted to identify faults, which are adjusted and lubricated as necessary.
• Drums and bearings are cleaned in a specialized part-washing machine.
• Bearings and drums are replaced if needed and properly greased.
• Seals and dust caps are replaced to maintain integrity.
• Brake functionality is tested and adjusted as required.
• Tires are carefully examined for wear and tear, cracks, and damage, and inflated to the correct pressure.
• Lights and wiring are verified to be operational and intact.
• Breakaway cables and chains are inspected and repaired as necessary.
